ANI KYD: Entangle (Alternative Tentacles)
The slinky upright bass groove and swinging drums punching in with jazzy string synth patches is not what listeners have come to expect from Fuel Injected .45 belter Kyd. But this six track release finds her and collaborators such as the extremely talented Stephen Hamm turning out some fine Goth punk torch singing. Beginning with the finger-snapping Virus, the album hits its first highpoint on the ballad Paralyzed where Kyd gets behind the “paralyzed by fear” chorus with truly haunting results. Then along comes Love Again which could be a single on AAA radio for the right reasons; its catchy, mature and really smoky. The more experimental Box of Broken Toys is a complete hoot and the closer Put the Lies Away is probably a song Soundgarden wish it could’ve written for its last album. All told a really good mix of well produced and memorable music from a singer with considerable range and ideas.

Ani Kyd's prior solo material — plus her band work with projects like Approach the Throne and Fuel Injected .45 — focused on metal, punk and rock, but the Vancouverite takes a softer approach her latest effort. Entangle is out digitally on January 7 through Alternative Tentacles, and it's available to stream in full at Exclaim.ca.

The first half of this six-song EP comes from a session with local punk Stephen Hamm (of the Evaporators). These tunes are filled with dark crooning and cinematic drama like one might expect to hear from a James Bond theme song.

The EP's second half is a sonically diverse collage of styles; "Taking a Leap" is a futuristic baroque ballad, while "Box of Broken Toys" is quirkily computerized and experimental, and "Put the Lies Away" ends the album with straight-forward, guitar-driven alt-rock
